Gaurav Sood 24-H tops All India ISC Board Exams 2008

The highlight of this year Board Exams was the excellent performance of Gaurav Sood 24-H who topped the All India ISC (Class 12) Board Exams with an awesome Average of 99%. He scored 100% in Maths & Chemistry, 98% in Physics & English, 95% in EVE, and 94% in Western Music & Economics.

In ISC from a total of 67 boys , 88% got over 80% while 25% got over 90%. The class average was 85.4%

ICSE boys (Class 10) bettered their last years average percentage of 84.6 to 85.2. Out of a total of 92 boys, 86% scored over 80% while 50% got over 90%. Abhishek Sharma 300-H and Vibhas Pahuja 272-O topped the ICSE in school with 96% marks.

In both ISC and ICSE exams no boy got less than 60%.

In the last few years the school has shown a steady upward rise in the Academic performance. The year 2003 seems to be a turning point in the Academic Performance of the school. Before this the average percentage of ISC and ICSE was in the mid seventies. However from 2003 the average percentage rose to the eighties and this year both had above 85%.

We like to congratulate the boys and staff of the school for the excellent results

The school now also offers the boys the option of doing the International Baccalaureate (IB) course in lieu of the ISC and the first batch of boys will be sitting for this exam in May 2009.

Rose Bowl Fundraising - An Opinion

Rajiv Sarin (44-H '74) tried responding to an earlier post about the Rose Bowl fund raising initiative but was unable to due to a technical error. He sent his suggestions on email which is interesting enough to publish as a post itself -

1) Doon alumni who wish to receive soft copy of the Rose Bowl should have a check box on the Rose Bowl Subscription Form indicating their choice;

2) Doon alumni who wish to renew with a credit card payment should be able to do so. DSOBS should consider setting up a Paypal account (cost of setting up a Paypal account and maintaining it is nominal) in its name allowing any alumnus to pay with their credit card; and

3) Doon alumni graduating from school should receive the Rose Bowl gratis for a period of five years post-graduation. Ditto for any alum senior citizens who graduated from school over 57 years ago (prior to 1950). This will provide a pool of Doon alums over a fifty plus year time span who will need to send in subscription renewal (for those interested in receiving the hard copy of the Rose Bowl).

Review of the Process for Election of the Office Bearers of the DSOBS

At last year's Annual General Meeting held in school over Founder’s, the tradition of following consensual convention in the process for “election” of Office Bearers of the DSOBS was sought to be challenged. Please use the email link below to provide your views on the proposal amending the way in which officer's to the DSOBS are elected. Do not forget to include your school number, house and batch when you do so.

The Rose Bowl needs you to stay in print!

As those of you who read the last Rose Bowl may know, the DSOBS publication is short of funds. The reason is simple - doscos used to pay a paltry Rs. 250 to become members of the society which included a free lifetime subscription to the Rose Bowl. Needless to say, the Rs. 250 per doesn't cover the full cost of printing and distributing the publication. Today graduates of Doon pay Rs. 5,000 to become members.

To cover the costs of printing and distribution, the society is asking doscos who passed out before 1998 to contribute Rs. 3,600. Old boys abroad are being requested to pay USD 150.00 to cover the extra postage costs. The society feels that this one time charge should keep the Rose Bowl alive for the next 8-10 years.

To pay your dues, download the form (PDF) write a cheque and mail it in. You can also view a list of doscos who have already contributed (excel file) here. And finally, click continue reading to read Gautam Chadha's letter which explains the finances in more detail.

On our 58th Republic Day on January 26, 2007, there was a third Dosco amongst the various Padmashri awardees. Regretfully, we omitted his name in our January 2007 issue of The Rosebowl on page 5 where we mentioned Amitav Ghosh (246-H ’72) and Vikram Seth (250-J ’68). In addition, Dr. Lalit Pande, (84-K ’65) was also awarded the Padmashri for Environment Protection.

Our heartiest congratulations to Dr. Lalit Pande. You have done The Doon School proud.

Welcome to 2007. Ready to engage online?

timeperrson.jpgTime Magazine named you the 2006 person of the year. Why? Because in 2006 people contributed photographs, blog postings, video clips and more online. They engaged online and shared their thoughts on the world around them.

It heralds a transformative movement from mass media to me-media where each individual is empowered to play a more active role in society. Why does this matter to doscos?

Because we too must engage more online with each other and the world around us. We must be willing to connect online and share information. We must be willing to take stands on issues concerning us and debate them publicly and professionally online. We must become an alumni body where every voice matters and every idea carries weight with the best ones bubbling to the top.

Hong Kong Doscos Get-together, a report

hkget_together.jpg

Vikram & Parveen Malhotra hosted the Hong Kong get-together at their residence and it was undoubtedly the best turnout we have had!

The highlight for the evening was that Mr & Mrs Bharat Mahey (1949 Batch father of Arjun Mahey) turned up for the meet! They were visiting their daughter who is based in Hong Kong.

We also had a guest from Singapore, Katalina, Himmat Singh's (20-KB 1989 Batch) girlfriend!

There are some new additions to the Dosco family in Hong Kong - Ashish Sharma (821-KB, 1981 Batch) and Rahul Badhwar (T House, 1986 Batch) bringing the total headcount to 14!

Report sent by Yatish Aron to the DSOBS.

London Get-together Photographs!

The camera only came out after we had all drunk a few beers so the ones who left early aren't included in this set. Around 25 people showed up at this month's get-together on Oxford Street near the "Bonds" street tube station in central London. The bar was loud and it is fair to say everyone had a great time. All in all a fun evening. Click for more photographs, comment on them and if you have dosco photographs send them to us.

In the latest Rose Bowl, Sati Pur (49-K '52) offered an explanation of the differences between the DSOBS and IPSS. He asked us to publish it online here too. Read the article and tell us what you think. Do you think the IPSS is representative of the school? Do you know the members? Is each class fairly represented?

And likewise, do you think that the DSOBS represents you as an old boy? Do you know your class representatives and the executive committee? Are you fairly represented? As reference at the end of the article we have published the official aims and objectives of the DSOBS.

A Summary of the Tsunami Relief Efforts

The most interesting piece in the summary is that the DSOBS has set up a fund titled, "Navodaya" to use for a future crisis. Hopefully, this will translate into a long term, consistent initiative to contribute to the betterment of Indian society. Also interesting to note, is that the catalysts for the idea were all older doscos - Lt Gen Adi Sethna (191-K '41), B G Verghese (150-J '44) and Shomie Das (165-H '51).

Will this help Doon shed its image of being an elitist, exclusive and self serving fraternity? We certainly hope so and wish the Navodaya efforts every success.
