Oberoi's Housemaster, Ms. Purnima Dutta is inviting all old boys and Oberoi fans to visit their 4th annual Pagal Gymkhana at Founder's Day 2009. Ms Dutta and the boys are looking to add to the festivities with more then food and frolic with 'green' and other initiatives at the event. To contribute with ideas, please contact PDT@doonschool.com. For more details please download the following document.
To be a Doon School boy is privilege enough, but to be invited to deliver the Founder’s Day Address – and that too on the Golden Jubilee of one’s Class, is surely indulgence in extremis. My grateful thanks to the Governor and the Board and to the Headmaster for this rare honour.
n our travels abroad and in India over the past few years, Analjit, Kanti and I have had the pleasure of meeting Old Boys of all vintages across the globe.
At these meetings what comes out strongly is their bond with the School, love for it and desire to give back. Whilst every donation, however big or small, is welcome, Old Boys in the US and Hong Kong have been particularly generous. Our grateful thank to every donor.
Doon tours with "The History Boys" to Delhi & Mumbai
The Doon School drama group The BHKBC (The Boards Have Killed the Bard Company) is touring with their Annual Production ‘The History Boys’ by Alan Bennett. The show will be performing in Mumbai and Delhi on the 9th and 11th of October respectively.
If you are free on those evenings, do come and check it out (the details of the venues are given below). The show starts at 7 PM (7: 20 in Bombay) on both evenings and runs to 1hr, 45 min (leaving enough time for a drink afterwards!). There are no tickets being charged for the shows.
The New York Times has published a story on open debates in Indian schools about politics. Kanti Bajpai is quoted discussing the new curriculum.
Kanti Bajpai, an adviser to the world politics text, described the new curriculum as “forcing” students “to look at what’s going on and why.” Mr. Bajpai, the headmaster of an exclusive boarding school in northern Dehradun town, said, “If you’re serious about active citizenship, you’ve got to do that.”
Download a copy of the invitation for the Jaipur House Refurbishment Plan cocktails. The event will be held on Friday, August 10th 2007 at the India Habitat Center. Be sure to tell other Jaipur House doscos about the event too.
Unfortunately, once we leave Doon, us Doscos do not have lifetime ownership of school! As the school is at pains to point out, no one is allowed to enter any of the boarding houses without express permission of the housemaster. This is a two decade old rule and while most doscos are respectful of it, some don't and cause unnecessary havoc. So next time you're visiting Doon and are interested in entering your old house, be sure to first knock on the housemaster's door first.
Dosco SAT Score: 2,370 out of 2,400 says Times of India
Harshvardhan Chamria was always known as a special talent at La Martinere for Boys (LMB). Though he had consistently set higher academic standards for himself, no one expected him to achieve what he has now made possible.
Not only is Harsh, possibly, the highest scorer in SAT — the mandatory entrance test that candidates have to take for entry to US universities — from Kolkata this year, he is perhaps the only plus-two passout ever who has been invited by at least seven of the Ivy League universities in the US to join their undergraduate degree programmes. Harsh completed his ICSE from The Doon School

He also published photographs of a recent Batch of 1993 get-together which are also viewable online in the network too. Join The Network today!

The Age of Reason and other dosco films by David MacDougall
Over the last few years, David MacDougall has produced five ethnographic films on The Doon School. His most recent film that came out in 2004 is still being discussed in academic circles and is worth highlighting as a result.
In The Age of Reason he focuses on the life of one student whom he discovers at the school. The film explores the thoughts and feelings of Abhishek, a 12-year-old from Nepal, during his first days and weeks as a Doon student. This is at once the story of the encounter between a filmmaker and his subject and a glimpse of the mind of a child at “the age of reason.”

Well for starters he was recently elected to the Ogilvy Worldwide board and currently is the executive chairman and national creative director of Ogilvy & Mather India. Below are some external links through which you can learn more about him.

Read the latest Doon School Weekly (PDF). The issue includes a report on the football season, a mid-term break account of a trek to Vasuki Tal (above Kedarnath) and the social service project in Fatehpur village.
From the Indian Express - Doon School is known as the alma mater of many a celebrity and counted among the best residential schools of the country but villagers of Fatehgram will remember its students and teachers for entirely different reasons. Fatehgram has been their classroom where their rural development initiatives have borne fruit, making the once remote village self-sufficient in its energy and livelihood needs.
We're looking for a dosco to send us a brief write and maybe with photographs of the dosco fundraising event that was held in NY recently. If you attended and can spare a few minutes to jot down your impressions of the event we'd be grateful. We can't promise you fame or fortune, but definitely a hearty vote of thanks.
The IPSS and DSOBS: What’s the difference and what's your opinion?
In the latest Rose Bowl, Sati Pur (49-K '52) offered an explanation of the differences between the DSOBS and IPSS. He asked us to publish it online here too. Read the article and tell us what you think. Do you think the IPSS is representative of the school? Do you know the members? Is each class fairly represented?
And likewise, do you think that the DSOBS represents you as an old boy? Do you know your class representatives and the executive committee? Are you fairly represented? As reference at the end of the article we have published the official aims and objectives of the DSOBS.

NY Doon School Fund Raiser on Friday, 29th Sept 2006
School provided us with an experience that shaped and influenced many of us into who we are today. For it to continue to provide generations of students with this privilege - we must give back.
The purpose of this gathering is to help the School raise funds to ensure that it continues to evolve to meet the needs of this ever changing world. Your support will be invaluable towards this endeavour. Analjit Singh, Kanti Bajpai (HeadMaster) and Sati Puri will be there to tell us more about the fund-raising efforts to date and
plans for the future.
Saadi Chowdhury (426-KA '00) helps with Dosco Glossary!
Cultures are defined by their languages so it is important that we don't lose ours! Saadi Chowdhury (426-KA '00) has volunteered to compile a "dosco glossary" which would include dosco slang that we used while in school. This glossary will be a public reference for all doscos. If you have suggestions for the glossary please email Saadi at saadichowdhury@yahoo.co.uk You can also add words to the comments section of this post though please refrain from using foul language.
This maybe old news for some doscos, but this year's ISC & ICSE results represented positive trends for both classes. The average ICSE percentage was the highest in a long time 85.64% while the ISC results at 83.02% was significantly higher than previous years. Congratulations.
Secularism and The Doon School - Getting to the Meat of the Matter
An issue that should have stayed within the boundaries of the school recently leaked out. The question was of what type of meat should be served in the central dining hall. Doon Online delayed publishing this news item until the issue had moved out of the media limelight.
The Doon School was founded on the principles of secularism. Students were first Doscos and Indians before they were anything else. Doon was established as a non-denominational institution open to all students irrespective of their religion or caste background. Since then, the goal of the school has always been to provide young Indians with a rounded education, and to instill in them a respect for the ideals of secularism, discipline and equality.
Here at Doon Online, we're disappointed to hear how the parents reacted. Let school issues remain school issues and respect the values upon which the school was founded. Don't politicize an issue. Read Times of India's coverage of the subject below.
Government forces Doon to Change Admission Policy?
Doon may need to allocate 22.5% of its admissions for backward classes as determined by the state government according to a new law enacted by the Lok Sabha. This means that Doon will no longer be merit based. Read The Economic Times article on the issue and tell us what you think.
We all know that we had phenomenal teachers at Doon. Teachers to whom we're indebted to for the rest of our lives. Dev Lahiri was one of them. Read this inspiring article about him and how he confounds doctors with his survival skills. Also, add your comments about your favorite teachers to the comments section at the end of the article.

No education of education By Anuradha Shenoy, Business Standard
Recent commentary on India’s educational system has focused on issues of “exclusion”. World Bank and UNDP reports focus on low enrolment data. Socio-economic reasons lead to early age school dropouts.
