Class of 1949 Golden Jubilee Get-Together

The Golden Jubilee gathering of the Class of 1949 was held at the Doon School during the Founder?s Day from 22nd to 24th October 1999.

The salient features of the get-together were as follows:
We had managed to establish contact with about 21 persons. 15 were expected to attend. However, finally 12 attended (nine with spouses) as three fell out due to unforeseen circumstances. Indu R.V. Singh (Kismet's wife) who lives in Dehra Dun, also joined us. Of these, 6 stayed at the Surabhi Place, close to the School, on the Chakrata Road and quite convenient; Surabhi became the gathering point for the Forty-niners during the week-end.

Standing (L to R ): Rajiv Dave [ex 296-J], Rai Bhadwar [ex 230-H], Jagjit Singh [ex 91-J], Harinder Singh [ex 31-H], Ram Nath [ex 235-J], Bhasker Menon [ex 111-H], Shamsher Singh [ex 177-K], Ranjan Roy [199-T], Petachi [ex 125-H], R.V. Singh [ex 294-J] & Murad Choudry [ex 227-T]. Sitting (L to R)Ram Nath Guddi, Rani H. Singh, Indu Kismet, Mira Choudry, Pammy Jagjit, Sumitra Menon, Prarach Dave, Purabi Roy, Kumud Singh.

The highlight of the Forty-niners was of course the Jubilee dinner held at the Masters Dining Room and adjacent terraces on the evening of the 22nd. This was quite a success. Besides the forty-niners, it was attended by the members of the Board of Governors as well as the Masons (H.M.), B.N. Singhs (Bursar), Shomie Das, Ramchandani's, Gurdial Singh and Sheel Vohra. The event was rounded off with Champagne to mark the occasion. This was followed by a post prandial session at the Surbahi which extended into the early hours of the morning and which provided an opportunity for relating of tales and exchanging memories of school days. A similar post dinner session also developed after the Headmaster's dinner on the 23rd night.
As per the consensus, the fund of Rs. 141,300 collected so far has been handed over to the DSOBS for bursaries to deserving sons of old boys.

L to R : Petachi, Rajiv & Prakash, Mina Choudry, Ram Nath & Guddi, Raja & Rani, Sumitra & Bhaskar, Kummud & Ranu.

Before we dispersed, there was a general consensus that having renewed association after such a long period and with the spouses also getting to know each other, that the Class of 49 should keep in touch in the future. Six of the Class live in and around Delhi and plan to get-together every now and then. We would all welcome anyone of the Forty-niners coming to Delhi or passing through to get in touch with me or any of the others and this could be made an excuse for having a get together.

Before I conclude, some 'well done's. (Bravo Zulu in Naval parlance):
(a)Harender for doing all the running around and tieing up various arrangements. One was quite impressed by his good P.R. with the School and others.
(b)Morad for use of his office facilities,
(c)Shamsher Singh for his gallant effort in attending inspite of poor health,
(d)Jagjit for being first of the mark with the contribution,
(e)All the 12 Apostles for contributing and to Bhaskar and Petachi for the higher contributions,
(f)A special 'thank you' for the charming spouses and Indu for gracing the occasion and generally adding warmth and colour to the proceedings. And Bravo Zulu to them for putting up with the mad hatter behaviour of their husbands.
