A Letter from the John Martyn Memorial Trust

Dear Old Boy,

John Martyn OBE, Padma Shri devoted his entire life to the cause of education in India. On his death in 1984,Mrs Indira Gandhi suggested that a Trust be founded in his name. Thus was born the John Martyn Memorial Trust with Mady Martyn, Vijay Lakshmi Pandit and Gulab Ramchandani as Founding members. For someone deeply committed to education beyond the walls of a public school, it is befitting for the JMMT to function as an educational charity.

Since 1986 the Trust has been running a primary School at Salangaon, a village off the Dehra Dun-Mussoorie diversion road. Today it has over 120 children from Classes I to V coming from Salangaon and surrounding villages. Over the years the school has not only laid the foundation of excellent education, but also transformed the lives of the parents and homes in the village community.

We charge only token fees, provide daily nourishing snack of whole milk and protein rich biscuits and conduct free medical examinations and treatment to children. We run on donations from well-wishers and the return on our savings.

We also support our deserving school leavers to pursue their studies in some local English medium schools. Meena was spotted as a rag picker by our Principal and admitted somewhat reluctantly, to our village school some eight years ago. Today, she is in Class IX in Scholars Home, an urban English medium school and of the fifty children ranks second in order of merit. She shows every promise of carving out a bright future for herself. One wonders where she would have been, but for Salangaon school. We have many such examples, each equally touching and indeed inspiring. They motivate us to continue our work at Salangaon Village School.

You can also be part of this experience by helping in one of many ways:
- Donating Rs. 5,000 per year will support one child in Salangaon school.
- Sponsoring one school leaver in Scholars Home for 7 years at around Rs 6,000 per year.
- Donating a lump sum to be added to the corpus towards school expenses.
- Donating towards capital expenditure for renovating our modest buildings, class rooms etc.

I earnestly appeal to you to join any of these schemes. Our children will bless you for your generosity and so will dear John Martyn from the heavens above.

JMMT is a registered Charitable Trust to which donations are exempt from Income Tax under Section 80 G of the Income Tax Act.

A bank Draft payable on any bank in Dehra Dun in favour of ‘The John Martyn Memorial Trust’ will bring you the blessings of Salangaon Village.

Correspondence and donations may be addressed to me at the below address.

With best wishes,

Sincerely,
