Harpal Singh

Harpal Singh (322-H '65) is the Chairman of Fortis Healthcare which is trying to lower the costs of HIV vaccines according to the Financial Express.

Union Minister for Petroleum & Natural Gas and Panchayati Raj Mani Shankar Aiyar (55-T '57) on Saturday announced a highly ambitious project called Rural Business Hubs, which will aim to eradicate rural poverty. He is also the author of Confessions of a Secular Fundamentalist.

Rohit Rana (657-OA '95) is organizing 'The Commonwealth Chess Championship' in Mumbai in August under the auspicious of the Maharashtra & All India Chess Federations. Doon is known to produce writers but this is probably one of the few times that the school has been featured in a piece of fiction.The two principal characters (Chekov and Zulu) in one of the stories in Salman's Rushdie's latest book, "East, West: Stories" studied at Doon.

Dr. Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India published an opinion piece in Wall Street Journal on May 19th. This article describes "The New India" and its role in the world. It is very interesting reading for any globally minded dosco.

Ajit Haksar

Former ITC Chairman, Doon School Board member and Pioneer of Indian Industry, Ajit N Haksar (49-K '40) passed away on May 20th, 2005.

There's a memorabilia summer special on. You can buy everything from flasks to boxer shorts emblazoned with the lamp. Download the brochure (.doc) to learn more. Memorabilia for "Dosco Moms" and "Dosco Dads" isn't offered but maybe that will come next.

ISC and ICSE results were recently announced. The Doon School ISC average was 76.33% while the ICSE average was 83.49% which is the highest in at least nine years.
The March Rose Bowl (7.5mb pdf) is now online. The print edition is going to be published for the forseeable future. Thank you for participating in the poll where we asked you whether it should go "electronic" only. Your feedback matters.

Spring 2005

Headmaster Kanti Bajpai will be talking about Doon's future and its fund raising efforts at a special Dosco event in New York on May 14th. All old boys are invited. The event is taking place at Utsav Festive India. Read about the fundraising efforts, the way ahead and the school's mission.
The Barefoot College was featured on the BBC recently. View the photo essay. The founder of Barefoot College, Bunker Roy (125-J '61) continues to be an inspiring role model for Doscos around the world. Also read about the National Network for India, another interesting dosco volunteer effort.
Karam Puri (655-KB'95) is acting in a new production called the SWAN in New York, NY. Read a review of the play by NY Theatre and buy tickets to watch the production.
Padmanabha Gopinath (154-H '54) is serving as the Counsellor to the Director-General of the International Labor Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. Prior to that, he worked for the United Nations. He has been recognized by Kofi Annan for his contributions to the UN System.
Malvinder Singh (136-JB '90) was nominated to join a group called the Young Global Leaders which has been constituted by the World Economic Forum (WEF). Malvinder is currently a Director at Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals.
Hari Menon (238-TB '85) has written an article about the Roopkund lake titled "Bones of a Riddle." Hari is Outlook Magazine's features editor.

Dr. Kanti Bajpai will be a panelist at an Asia Society event in New York on March 11, 2005 titled, "India’s Tryst with Destiny in the 21st Century." The event is sponsored by the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) and India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF).
Ashvin Kumar's (271-OB '91) film Little Terrorist was recently nominated for an Oscar in the "Short" film category. Download the movie. Also read Ashvin's exclusive Doon Online interview. While Ashvin did not win an oscar, we congratulate him for being nominated.
Lt. General Deepak Summanwar (160-K '64) took over as the new Director General of Military Intelligence at the Army headquarters on February 22nd. He commanded an infantry brigade in Rajasthan and a mountain brigade on the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir during the Kargil conflict in 1999.
Lt.Gen.Adi M.Sethna (191-K '39)has written an article titled, " The Dosco and Public Consciousness." in which he reminses on the dosco value of public duty. Discuss whether doscos today have lost their sense of public duty in Virtual Doon. Also read B.G.Verghese's (150-J '44) article " The Rewards of Giving."
Dr. Gurpreet Singh, Board Member of The Doon School has started ‘‘Sikhya-The School of Learning,’’ a luxury school for slum children.

Saurabh Narayan Singh (408-KA '93) won his seat from Hazaribagh (Jharkhand) in the assembly elections.He was recently interviewed by Rediff
The Daily Telegraph (UK) discusses Eton's influence on India in a recent article titled, "Master shows how Etonians shaped the Raj" Andrew Robinson, an Eton history master, has been studying Eton's links with India. The Doon School is mentioned in this context. Also read the Wall Street Journal article from 1999 which discusses the connection.
India Today has highlighted 50 young men and women who they consider to be on the fast track. The list includes Doscos Rahul Gandhi (MP), Dushyant Singh (MP), Jitin Prasada (MP), Malvinder & Shivinder Mohan Singh (Industrialists) and Sandeep Khosla (Architect).

The Chandbagh School Inderjit Badhwar(155-T '59) was declared winner of one of France's most prestigious literary honours when his maiden novel "La Chambre Des Parfums" was awarded Le Prix Litterarire (Literary Prize) for the best debut foreign novel of 2004.

Fall 2004

The Chandbagh School Read an interview from last year with Mr. Masud Hasan, President, Chand Bagh to learn about The Chandbagh School, Lahore
A Doon School group that included the Headmaster Dr. Bajpai, Mr. Gursharan Singh, Mr. Philip Burrett, Mr. Deepak Sharma and forty-three visited the Chandbagh School, Lahore. They played the Chandbagh School in cricket (lost), Soccer ( won 4-1) and Basketball (won 62-42.). The school musical ensemble also performed.
Bunker Roy's (125-J '61) Barefoot College received another award recently. Support the John Martyn Memorial Trust.
Participate in the Doon Online Survey on Dosco Get-togethers. Your participation will help Doscos organize more meaningful and entertaining get-togethers around the world. The results of the survey will be published on Doon Online.
Eton College is putting on an exhibition titled, "Eton and India" in early 2005. The college is interested in any artifacts that Doon or Doscos may have that describes the historic relationship. Please email Devin Kholi if you can help.

Summer 2004

Vijay Hensman recently passed away. He was the former house master of Kashmir House. Doon Online extends its condolences to his family and friends. Read the letter from his son to the Dosco community.

Dosco politicians were featured in a Times of India article on May 10th, 2004 titled, "Dooned if you do, damned if..." Read the article in the Press Room.
Rahul Gandhi, Scindia, Dushyant Singh, Kamal Nath, Mani S Aiyer, Jitin Prasada, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Naveen Patnaik were elected to the Lok Sabha in the recent national elections. If you know of other doscos elected, please contact us.

Spring 2004

Mr. Jug Suraiya, editor of the editorial pages of the Times of India and Vinod Mehta, chief editor of Outlook Magazine spoke at The Doon School on the changing face of India and elections 2004. Both discussed how India is shining "selectively."
Ashvin Kumar (271-OB '91) has just produced and directed a short film titled, "Little Terrorist" Click here to view the film.
Doon School history was made with the first ever socials for "C" formers with Hopetown school on April 18th, 2004. The successful event included dancing, musical chairs and some not so good food. Doon is now exploring ways to introduce socials for "S", "A" and "B" formers as well (source Doon School Weekly) .
Martyn and Foot House will be demolished at the end of the month. It is one of the many changes that is taking place at Doon. Discuss this significant change to the Chandbagh landscape in Virtual Doon
The 3rd DSOBS Inter House Cricket Tournament was held on February 28th, 2004. Read the highlights and learn who won. Peter Mukherjea (17-H '71) ranked 13th and Prannoy Roy (66-J '66) ranked 36th in the recent India Today survey on the Fifty Most Powerful People in India.

Winter 2003

Vir Sanghvi has written a thoughtful article for the Hindustan Times in which he argues that Rajiv Gandhi was ahead of his time. Read the article in the press coverage area.

Mr R.N Kunzru (Teacher-1952-1985), passed away peacefully on Dec 26th, 2003 in Dehra Dun. He is survived by his son, Vineet Kunzru (706-TB '82), and his daughter Vidhu Kunzru (513-TB '76). Doon Online extends its condolences to his family and friends.
The Doon School was recently featured in a Financial Times (London, UK) article titled, "Liberal Streak". This article discusses Doon in the context of secularism and school values. Mani Shankar Aiyer (55-T '57) was the Chief Guest at the Founders Day celebrations of the Assam Valley School, Guwahati. Educational consultant and former headmaster of The Doon School, Mr. Gulab Ramchandani (225-T '42) helped establish this school.

Anurag Aggarwal (577-OB '94) passed away in a road accident a day before Diwali. He was returning home to Dehradun from Meerut when the driver went off to sleep five kilometres from Roorkee. The vehicle collided into a speeding bus. Anurag died on the spot. Doon Online extends its condolences to his family and friends.
Commodore Indru Wadhwani (50-J '57) spent 28 years in the Indian Navy. He is now President of Mallya Hospital in Bangalore and is an executive member of the CII Health Committee working closely with the health ministry. Did you know that the resources of the Indian Public Schools Society was just 100,000 pounds (or 14 lakhs) at the time The Doon School was founded?
