Winter 2002

Hari Dang (Padma Shri), batch of 1970, recently published a book titled "Himalayan Environment -Issues and Concerns of Conservation and Development." The book was released by Mr. N. D. Tiwari, the Chief Minister of Uttaranchal on Tuesday, January 14th, 2003. The book has been released under the Indian Mountaineering Foundation International Himalayan Environment Programme. Indian Flag Prannoy Roy (66-J '66) also known as Tempest, was featured as one of the fifty most influential people in India in the January issue of India Today. Prannoy runs NDTV, a television production company in New Delhi.
Chandrachur Singh (484-JB '87) has signed on for a film titled Agnipank, which is based on the Indian Air Force. The other members of the cast include Rahul Dev and Shamita Shetty.
The January 13th issue of India Today highlights global Indians that are doing India proud. Two Doscos feature in the list - Vikram Seth and Amitav Ghosh. Lets hope The Doon School continues to produce global success stories that do the country and the school proud.
The Economic Times has a front page article titled "Scramble for Dosco Teachers -For wannabe Doons, don from hills is a boon" that discusses how Doon teachers are in high demand as principals all over the country. The founders of the Doon school probably never realized that Doon would not only educate future leaders but also breed strong principals and teachers. Read the article in the Press Coverage.

Tejeshwar Singh (354-T '63) read with his well modulated voice carefully selected excerpts from "Out of God's Oven - Travels in a factured land" by Dom Moraes and Sarayu Srivatsa at the book's launch at the Taj Hotel in New Delhi on December 23rd, 2002. Tejeshwar is the Managing Director of Sage Publications.

The Doon School Weekly The Doon School Weekly celebrated its 2000th issue on Nov 9th, 2002. Congratulations to all the managers and editors past and present.
The Positive Side by Samir Modi Harry Gill (544-JA '93) ran the New York Marathon on Nov 3rd. He finished 14,902 out of 30,000 odd participants.
For the first time in its history, the INSEAD MBA program in France has four Doscos in its program at the same time: Vijayant Khosla(K '84), Asheesh Malaney (92-KA '89), Sanjay Pandit (127-HB '90), and Saurabh Saklani (378-KA '92).
Television personality, Karan Thapar (238-JA '71) wrote an editorial titled "Of priests and presidents" about Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam's Founders Day speech.
Malvinder Singh (136-JB '90) has been appointed Director of Ranbaxy India. Mani Shankar Aiyer (56-T '57) wrote an editorial titled "Two hung elections" and several Dehra Dun schools were raided by income tax authorities excluding The Doon School. Devendra Singh, Dean of Studies (DVS) at the Doon School, was presented with the National Award for teachers on September 5, 2002, by the President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.
Samir Modi (602-TB '88) has produced a coffee table book on AIDS called The Positive Side. The book was launched by the Chief Minister of Delhi at an event at the Maurya Sheraton Hotel. Several Doscos including Mohit Jayal, Sharad Sheru Sharma, Robin Roy, Vivek Gupta, Gagan Sinha attended the event. More information on the book can be found at the Modicare Foundation website.
Roshan Lal of M/s Mela Ram and Sons passed away on August 10th, 2002. Popularly known as Mr. Mela Ram he has been associated with the Doon School since partition. Summer 2002

A new open source version of Virtual Doon (the Dosco discussion board) has been launched! Register and be one of the first to start a conversation. You will need to use the old username and passowrd to access it (Hint the username and password begin with the letter "c") Doon Online will be providing viewing access to the old discussion board soon.
Naveen Patnaik the Chief Minister of Orissa and Anang Udai Singh Deo (42-T '62) Orissa Energy Minister were featured in an Economic Times article that discussed the power issues in Orrisa. Read the article in the Press Coverage.
Jyotiraditya Scindia (632-JB '88) was interviewed by the Times of India on June 2nd, 2002. Read the article in the Press Coverage.
Nikhil Nanda was featured in an Economic Times article on May 18th, 2002 titled "Nikhil Nanda: The business of life." Read the article in the Press Coverage.
Deepak Chandhoke (375- H '70) was killed by a bullet in an attack while on his way to work in Shillong in May. Vijay, his elder brother who was in the car with him was also killed. He is survived by his elderly mother, wife Rita and daughter Kanika. Doon Online extends its condolensces to his family and friends.
The serial Jugalbandi, which was directed and produced by Gyan Seth (271-J '57) has been selected for screening at the Golden Rose Television Festival at the Montreux Palace Hotel in Switzerland. Jugalbandi was developed as a 13 serial Music series for DD - Bharti and featured leading exponents of different fields of music.

Spring 2002

The Doon School student choir-orchestra put on its third major concert this time in Chennai on April 11th, 2002. The concert was a resounding success. Read its review "Raga meets rhythm" from The Hindu newspaper in the Press Coverage.

Learn about Doscos who were in New York at the time of the terrorist attacks. Fortunately, no one was directly affected by the tragedy. Visit the Sikh Communications Council, an organization created to prevent discrimination against Sikhs in America in the wake of the terrorist attacks.

Fall 2001

Air Marshal Brijesh Dhar Jayal started his career by joining JSW (academy) where he won the Sword of Honour. He joint the IAF as a fighter pilot andwas sent to the Empire Test Pilot's School, England. After that he went on to become one of India's most accomplished test pilots with over 4000 hours on jet fighters like the Jaguars, Mig 21s, and Mig 29s among others. He retired in 1994 as an Air Marshal (Comander in Chief South Western Air Command) and now lives in Dehra Dun and is on the Dosco Board of Governors as well.
Doon Online has just learnt that Sanjiv Sinha, a special correspondent with The Indian Express died in the plane crash with Madhavrao Scindia on September 30th. Senior Congress Leader Madhavrao Scindia tragically died in a plane crash on September 30th, 2001. He was the father of Jyotiraditya M Scindia (632-JB '88) and was an active member of the Doon School Community having served on the Board of Governors of the school. Thank you for helping us track down Doscos in the New York area at the time of the terrorist attacks. Fortunately no Doscos were directly affected by the terrorists attacks even though several live or work near the World Trade Center. Our thoughts go out to those affected by the tragedy. Summer 2001

Read the Business Standard profile on Analjit Singh (132-J '71) titled "The "hands-off, nose-in" businessman" in the Press Coverage.
Captain Amarinder Singh (45-T '59) has just released a new book titled, "Kargil, A Ridge Too Far." It is the first accurate account of the Kargil war according to Army Chief General S.Padmanabhaiah, who released the book at a function on July 27th, 2001. Interestingly, the Agra Summit between India and Pakistan which ended this week was hosted by the Jaypee Palace Hotel which is owned by Suresh Jain (622-JA '88) and was extensively covered in the media by NDTV (for StarTV News) which is owned by Prannoy Roy (66-J '66). Prannoy Roy himself covered the summit along with Shivraj Prasad (356-HA '92) for NDTV. Arun Singh (207-K '60) ex-minister of state for defence is currently a special adviser on foreign affairs to Minister for External Affairs Jaswant Singh.
Martand Singh (222-K '63) edited a coffee-table book titled Handcrafted Indian Textiles that was published a few months ago. This book is based on the Visvakarma series of textile exhibitions (1980-1990) which he initiated with the Ministry of Textiles. These exhibitions were a part of the Festival of India programmes in the UK, France, Sweden, and Russia.
Shiv Kunal `Fauji' Verma (182-H '76) as President of Canvas media is releasing a CD-ROM on the Taj Mahal and Mughal India. Also, following up on the Kargil Film he produced, he is preparing to shoot a film on the IAF which covers the aerial aspect of the War. Cleared by the Prime Minister to fly in all types of fighters, this will be his second film on the Air Force after `Salt of the Earth', which was the history of the IAF. On June 22nd and 23rd, Dr. M. S. Gill, President of the Himalayan Club, inaugurated a Trisul Exhibition and released the book "For Hills to Climb", Edited by Aamir Ali, a tribute to the contribution made by the Doon School to early Indian mountaineering. This was in memory of the June 23rd, 1951 Indian expedition to the Himalayan peak, Trisul 23, 360 ft. The summit team consisted of Gurdial Singh, Roy Greenwood and Dawa Thondup. It is generally accepted that this achievement marked the beginning of Indian Mountaineering.

Dr. Udai Banerji (72-HB '83) ran in the London Marathon on April 22nd and finished with a time of 5hrs 55ms. He wore a T-shirt that read "Most charities ask you to examine your conscience, we ask you to examine your testicles - The Cancer Research Campaign."

Spring 2001

India Today just published a very interesting article on how The Doon School is becoming the "template" for new schools in India and how Dehra Dun is now playing host to a whole array of new education barons. Read the article in the Press Coverage.

Dr Biala and two other guides, Dr Shukla and Mr Joshi lead a Doon School team that scaled Peak Kalidhang, an unconquered peak that the army has been unable to scale in two attempts. Read the Times of India article in the Press Coverage.

Virender Singh Sikand (272-T '65) passed away on February 22nd, 2001, in New Delhi after suffering from cancer for almost 4 months. He will be greatly missed by family and friends and is survived by his wife Poonam, daughter Pallavi and son Arjun (372-TB '99). Doon Online extends its condolensces to his family and friends.

Vijit Ramchandani (225-JA '76) passed away suddenly on February 22nd, 2001 in Minneapolis, USA. His parents, Gulab and Ratna Ramchandani had a simple memorial service for him in their garden at Udyan village Jhajra, Chakrta Road, Dehra Dun on Sunday March 11th at 4:30pm.
